Arborists usually start with a throw line (a lightweight cord) attached to a throw bag (a small weighted pouch, often 8–16 oz). Here’s how it works:

• The throw bag is swung or launched into the tree using a precise underhand or overhand motion.

• The goal is to get the throw line over a strong, stable branch (called a tie-in point).

• Once the line is over the branch and back to the ground, they detach the throw bag and use the throw line to pull up their climbing rope.

Pro tip: Skilled arborists often use a Big Shot slingshot or even a throw line cannon to launch the bag more accurately into tall trees
